Conspiracy of Silence – Book Reivew

img_20170104_150636680_top Conspiracy of Silence (The Tox Files) by Ronie Kendig

I love trying out new Action Book authors. Because I love books that are full of action. So I was pretty excited to give this book a try. It sounded interesting and entertaining.

Conspiracy of Silence definitely did not disappoint. It started with some great action and kept going all the way to the end.

From the back cover, “Four years after a tragic mission decimated his team, Cole “Tox” Russell has been disavowed by the United States. And that’s fine – he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed, Tox is lured back into action.”

Tox rounds up a special forces team and they head out to save the world. Running into secret societies, deception, a global pandemic, and of course redemption along the way.

Of course, there’s always his past coming back to haunt him. And more bad guys than you can count. Throw in a love interest and complicated family matters, this book is packed with action, adventure, and intrigue!

All in all, an interesting and exciting read.

My 5yr old was super excited to help me review this Beginner’s Bible. She’s been begging me for a new Bible and she just loves this one. The pictures are bright and fun and the stories are short and easy to read to her.

She even enjoys trying to read the stories on her own. They’re a bit above her reading level so she doesn’t get very far, but it’s still fun to try.

Since it’s Christmas time, she’s been picking stories about Jesus birth and other Christmas related stories for me to read to her each night. Super sweet.

This is an awesome Bible for young children!

Shattered Vigil – Review

The Shattered Vigil (The Darkwater Saga) by Patrick W. Carr

This is the second book in The Darkwater Saga Series. The first book is The Shock of Night. I read The Shattered Vigil without first reading The Shock of Night. It took me the first couple of chapters to get oriented to the characters and events but overall, it wasn’t that hard to pick it up in the middle of the story.

Though, if you have the time, reading the first book first is probably way better.

The Shattered Vigil was definitely an exciting read. I enjoyed it and once it got going, it was hard to put down.

Follow Willet and the Vigil as they fight to rescue their continent from the dark forces. There’s assassins, kings and queens, noblemen, and even church leaders who all want power and have differing agendas. Can Willet see through it all and save the continent?

This book was fun to read with non-stop excitement throughout!

Charlie the Tramp – giveaway

Charlie the Tramp by Russell Hoban and pictures by Lillian Hoban. This book is a hardcover, 50th edition, reprint. After reading it I can see why it was the Winner of the Boys Club of America Junior Book Award, 1968. This is a fun book that my kids love to read and re-read.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Charlie the Beaver wants to be a tramp when he grows up. “Tramps don’t have to learn how to chop down trees and how to roll logs and how to build dams. Tramps just tramp around and have a good time. Tramps carry sticks with little bundles tied to them. They sleep in a field when the weather is nice, and when it rains they sleep in a barn.” Charlie sets off with his bundle. But when he hears water trickling, he can’t get to sleep. Will he be able to resist the urge to make it stop? As Grandfather Beaver says, “You never know when a tramp will turn out to be a beaver.”

An American classic is back in a special 50th anniversary hardcover edition.

This book is super cute. My younger kids enjoyed having this book read to them while my 3rd grader enjoyed reading this book on her own. It’s a beautiful, hard cover book that is a great addition to any kid’s library.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Russell Hoban (1925-2011) first became famous for his children’s picture books about a badger named Frances and other animal characters that have a lot in common with children we know – bedtime for Frances, A Baby Sister for Frances, Bread and Jam for Frances, and Emmit Otter’s Jug-band Christmas.

After reading Charlie the Tramp my 8yr old has requested a copy of Bread and Jam for Frances. Maybe I’ll surprise her for Christmas 🙂

ctrampABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR

Lillian Hoban (1925-1998), one of America’s favorite children’s book illustrators, is best known for a young chimpanzee named Arthur and his little sister, Violet. She also illustrated six of Russell Hoban’s books about Frances the badger, which have taken their place among the great classics of children’s literature. Lillian Hoban was born in Philadelphia and attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. She studied dance for ten years and became a professional dancer. She began to write and illustrate her own stories only after having children, basing her tales on their experiences.

The pictures in this book are just beautiful and they really add color to the story and make it come alive.

Growing Up Social – Review

Growing Up Social: Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World by Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane

20161115_223519

How has the digital age and technology affected our children? How does it affect my relationship with my children? How much technology is too much? What can I as a parent do to help my kids stay connected in real relationships?

All these questions and more are answered in this book. This is pretty standard Gary Chapman. He breaks the book down into sections like anger management (you’d be amazed at what research shows about screen time and anger) and shyness.

While there’s lots of research cited in the book about what is healthy screen time for you and your kids and how all this technology is changing our brains, Chapman also focus a lot on how to relate to your children and what skills need a little extra focus these days.

He gives great advice for setting guidelines for technology usage and what we as parents can do to set a good example for our children. Sometimes, something as simple as putting your phone away for dinner can make a big difference to your children. It’s important that my children know that they are way more important than my phone!

This book is great for if you’re just looking for some good guidelines or for if you need help to make some needed changes. Wherever you’re at as a parent, you’ll find some great info and suggestions for helping your kids use technology in a way that doesn’t interfere with their relationships with people around them.

I received this book free for purposes of my review. All opinions are my own.

Kindergarten Necessities

So, you want to homeschool? You’re starting with your Kindergartner, and you have no idea what you should do. You start researching curriculum, you even buy a bunch. There’s not a lot of Kindergarten – compared to other grades. But you still manage to get quite a pile.

Your Kindergartner is less than thrilled. Teaching reading is frustrating. And don’t even get me started on math! Your child doesn’t seem to be learning, and is definitely not having fun. Actually, what is a Kindergartner supposed to learn? If you do a google search, you’ll find a huge list of Kindergarten readiness and even more lists of what your child should know by the end of Kindergarten. It’s overwhelming.

So, let’s start at the top. Kindergarten is from German and literally translated means “Children’s Garden”. It’s supposed to be a time of learning, fun, and adventure.

But how do you do this and still teach the necessary academics?

For starters. What exactly is necessary in Kindergarten? When I was a kid, it was reading, writing, and math. And lots of time on the playground. And even then, it was less than is expected of my kids now. It was totally normal for half the class to be reading by the end of Kindergarten and the other class to just not quite be there yet. But, everyone would be reading by the end of first grade. Nowdays people want their kids to read before they start Kindergarten (check out those Kindergarten readiness lists I mentioned) Speaking of reading, what exactly does that look like for a Kindergartner?

I have 3 academic goals in Kindergarten for my kids. Reading, Math, and Writing. We cover other subjects like history and science. But not in a formal book learning manner. My Kindergartner often sits in while I’m working on history with my 3rd grader. She definitely participates in any and all science experiments – because those are always cool. And we do lots of fun field trips like the local symphony orchestra, replicas of Columbus’s ships, the local science museum, zoo, etc.

But as far as formal teaching. I can’t effectively teach anything else until my child can read, have a basic understanding of numbers, and write legibly.

Because Kindergarten shouldn’t be frustrating. And you should be working with your child at their pace. Here’s what I do. It worked well with my now 3rd grader and it’s producing a non-frustrating year for my Kindergartner.

1. Reading – I love, love, love Hooked on Phonics. I tried it out for my first child and I’m just loving it! Did I mention how awesome it is? The preschool level is all about learning your letter names and sounds – my 3yr old loves to get his book out and “do school” with us. He’ll get out crayons, markers, etc. and trace letters for a good 30 minutes and we’ll discuss the sounds and letter names that he’s tracing.

The K level is all about short vowel words. It’s divided in segments that are easy for a young child to handle. My 5yr old who insists she can’t read, is reading these books just fine. And since each lesson builds on the past one, your child will be reading more and more without realizing how much they actually can read. – Seems to be a common problem in my house. “I can’t read that!” declares the child. Who then reads it, and is shocked that it was way easier than expected.

We barely made it into the 2nd grade level when my oldest decided that she didn’t need them any more. She reads to herself every night when she goes to bed plus other reading for school and such throughout the day. She really didn’t need any more teaching on how to read by this stage, so we dropped it. I do have the books through 4th grade in case I need them though.

One awesome things about hooked on phonics, if you’re on a tight budget, these books can usually be found at your local library and you can just keep borrowing them over and over as you need them.

One other thing that has really helped our reading is these blend ladders from Abeka. We work on a sheet a day – sometimes the same sheet for a couple of days. And it’s great at helping kids get comfortable putting two sounds together. It’s always amazing to me how my children’s reading makes a huge leap forward at the exact same time that reading blends becomes easy.

Education2. Math – My favorite math is Abeka. It’s possible that this is because this is the math I grew up with. However, it also seems to work well for my girls. The pages are colorful. And everything is in short segments. There’s one clock, 5 addition problems, 5 number order problems, a color by number, etc.

Here’s the thing about math. I know Abeka is this way, and I assume a lot of other math curriculum is this way as well. They repeat the same thing every year. So, if your child doesn’t get it completely the first year. Don’t stress, they’ll get it next year or the year after. If you’re child is way behind, I would be concerned. But if your Kindergartner is basically on par with their peers and can generally do their math with assistance from you. They’re just fine.

For my oldest, I spent the entire Kindergarten year explaining what addition and subtraction are. She figured it out just fine by 1st grade. For my current Kindergartner, she already knew this somehow. I think my oldest must have taught her. Teaching her math is so easy! Addition, subtraction, number sequence, telling time, and patterns are all Kindergarten skills.

For you parents with a struggling Kindergartner, the key is just perseverance. Keep teaching them and they will get it. How do I know? you ask. Well, I would classify my current 3rd grader as struggling in math until this year. K through 2nd grade was just hard. She’s very literal and just struggled if you changed anything (like 5+2 and 2+5 being the same thing was hard for her to grasp). This year, in 3rd grade – which is WAY harder than previous grades – things seem to have finally clicked. Math isn’t her favorite subject, but she’s no longer struggling with it – and we’re already doing long division 1/4 of the way through the year. (actually, spelling somehow tops the list as “most hated 3rd grade subject”).

So, if your child is struggling, just keep patiently explaining it to them over and over. Sometimes it’s just a matter of their ability to analyze things catching up with what you’re trying to teach them. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” is a great motto for math.

3. Handwriting – First things first, don’t stress if you can’t read your kindergartner’s handwriting. It’ll be a few years before most kids can really hold a pencil perfectly. The key at this age is that they’re at least trying to form the letters and numbers properly. Writing some numbers and letters backwards is perfectly normal. Just keep modeling the right way to write and they’ll get it eventually.

I did get a writing curriculum – just the worksheets – because I like having a curriculum. But, to be honest, my Kindergartner’s best writing practice is done on this dry erase book. It’s $4 on Amazon and has free shipping if you have prime. Well worth the money, in my opinion. She’ll spend a good deal of time each week tracing, erasing, and re-tracing her letters. I’m perfectly happy to let her do this instead of her handwriting curriculum. The goal is that she learn how to write her letters and any method that she likes is good with me.

Chipex Car Paint Touch-Up How-To and Giveaway

I received this product free for purposes of my review. All opinions are my own.

Chipex Touch-Up Car Paint comes with a 100% color match guarantee and is fast & simple to use.

Step 1: Look in your car and find the paint code (it was in the sticker in my driver side door). If you don’t have your code you can look up your car by make, model, and year. But, in my case, there were a few too many similar colors for me to just guess based on the make and model of my car. So, I found my code and started there.

Step 2: Enter the color code and look at your options. You’ll see a list of car make, model, and year. Just pick yours from the list.

Step 3: Order and wait for it to arrive. My package arrived way faster than I expected. It took about a week and a half to arrive. Since I picked the slowest shipping option, I was surprised that it arrived this fast.

img_20161007_171011503

Here’s my kit. There’s paint, cleaner, wax, gloves, paint brushes, cloth, towel, and a little cleaning block. It doesn’t look like much, but since it’s just for fixing scratches, this paint will last forever.

Step 4: Make sure your car is clean. I just cleaned the area I was planning to paint.

Step 5: Using the brush, apply the paint to your scratches or dings. I decided to test it on a pretty dinged up area on the side of my car. Just look at all those nicks!

img_20161007_171907401

Step 6: Let paint dry for 1 to 3 minutes. Yup, minutes. It’s super fast!

Step 7: Wrap the blue towel around the black cleaning block and spray on a little bit of the cleaning solution. Wipe it over the painted dings to smooth out any excess paint.

Step 8: Squirt some wax on the yellow microfiber cloth and do a quick rub on/ rub off wax of the area.

Step 9: Don’t power wash for at least 2 weeks. So, if you need to wash your car, go to the car wash before doing your touch-up paint with Chipex. Also, if you didn’t quite get it and need to add more paint, you’ll want to wait 2 weeks as well just to make sure the paint sets properly.

img_20161007_172606658

Just look at how much better that looks! The paint color was a perfect match as well. I’m very happy with how well Chipex works and as soon as I’ve waited my 2 weeks I’m going to wash my car and then touch-up any remaining dings that I missed.

img_20161010_161246402

Along with Chipex Touch Up Paint I also got to try their Screen Wash. You’re supposed to dilute this in the screen wash container in your car. This one bottle is 5 refills. And I’ll help rain slide off your windshield.

My husband really wanted to use this on his car but his wiper fluid doesn’t spray so I made him a spray bottle and we treated the windshield with this a couple of times. I added the screen wash to my car container and sprayed and cleaned off with my windshield a couple of times. Of course, now that I’ve treated my windows it hasn’t rained so I don’t actually know how effective it is. It did a great job of cleaning off my car windshield though!

A Lady Unrivaled – Book Review

I received this book free for purposes of my review. All opinions are my own.

img_20161008_144314484

A Lady Unrivaled by Roseanna M. White. Part of the “Ladies of the Manor” series. This book is full of mystery, intrigue, and of course, romance. A tad more romance that I usually read, but just based on the title, I was expecting that. It wasn’t over the top or anything so I really didn’t mind it at all.

Plus the mystery itself was interesting and gripping enough that I really had to read the entire book to find out what happened.

This book is easy to read. And is quite interesting. Once I started it I had trouble putting it down! Who wants the diamonds? Who has the diamonds? Who knows what? And who will get the diamonds in the end? All questions that I just couldn’t put the book down until I found the answers.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it makes a great addition to my mystery book collection.

My girls are 8 and 5 and they just love this book! The devotions are short and easy for them to understand. In fact, they’ve basically taken the book for themselves and hidden it from me. They’re having so much fun doing this together that they’ve asked me not to read it to them. They want to do it themselves. Each evening the 8yr old will read a devotion (or 2) to the 5yr old before they go to sleep. This is in addition to our usual family devotion each night.

I think it’s so awesome that my girls want to learn more about God together and it’s a great start to them learning how to have their own devotions instead of just family devotions.

We received the girls version of this devotion. And the girls are loving all the VeggieTales princess pictures and such that are throughout the book.

veggiegirl

At $9.99 this is an awesome devotional book to read to your young child or to have an older child read to a younger child. Whether you’re wanting this for your children or as a gift for a child in your life, this is such a fun and exciting devotional for children.
